This year the golf league will tee off every Tuesday from March 28 through September 12 at the back nine of Newport Beach Golf Course (at the end of the runway of John Wayne Airport) located at 3100 Irvine Ave. in Newport Beach.
SignUps:
Signup sheet will be open approximately every Thursday at 12 noon. Any players signed up with less than the $20 green fee will be put on the waiting list. First 40 players signed up (with enough funds) will be given a tee time and signup sheet will be closed. Anybody else signed up after 40, will be put on the waiting list. If there's enough daylight available, we may open more spots.
No Show:
If you sign up and are assigned a tee time and you don't show with no advance notice prior to course payment, your green fee will be deducted from roster. The course is paid the full amount of signed up players about 30 minutes prior to the first tee time. Please contact Shannon or Scott or Joey as soon as you can if you think you will be late to your tee time or you cannot make it.
League Fees and Payment:
The league fees consists of a one time membership fee, and weekly green fees (only paid when the player plays). Membership fee pays for end of the year party and tournament prizes. Green fee's pays the course fees and weekly tournament prizes and contests.
For this year, the fees will be as follows:
Membership Fee = $50
Weekly Green Fee = $20
The preferred method of payment of fees is via Venmo, Zelle, check, or cash. You can mail checks to Scott Klein via US mail or deliver them in person. Whenever you send money, please include a note indicating what it is intended for. Make checks payable to: Scott Klein. Pre-payment of fees is highly encouraged and makes things easier for the league officials and that is always a good thing.
Handicaps:
Previous year's players will begin with the previous handicap rounds of last year. All new players will begin with a clean slate and their beginning handicap is based on their first 3 rounds played (SCGA and other handicaps are not used). Handicaps are calculated based on an average of the 3 lowest scores in the last 5 rounds played. If a player has only played 3 rounds, all scores will be used. If a player has only played 4 rounds, the three lowest scores will be used to compute the handicap. Note that the scores from future tournaments may not used when computing a players handicap. Handicaps will be updated each time a player plays and will be posted in a score/handicap spreadsheet each week, which will be posted on the league web site each week.
Contests:
Below are descriptions of the operation of the various contests held by the league. Longest Drive Contest
To qualify, your first drive must be in the fairway and have a clear, unobstructed view of the green. Adjacent fairways do not count nor does it count if your ball is in the rough. Second drives (if required) also do not qualify. Drives on the green (and green fringe) qualifies, but drivers over/past the green does not qualify. There will be a marker with a piece of paper on it where you can write your name if you happen to hit the longest drive. The player who hits the longest drive (into the fairway) will put his or her name on the form and places the marker where their drive came to rest. If someone from the next group out-drives the marker, then they write their name on the form and move the marker to where their ball comes to rest. The last person's name on the form wins as they have hit the longest drive of all. Note that if no one manages to hit a drive into the fairway, then no one wins the contest.
Closest to the Pin Contest
To qualify, you must drive your ball onto the green on your first shot (2nd - nth shots onto the green do not count). Note that this implies that if you hit your first shot OB, you do not qualify even if your second shot lands on the green (actually this would be your 3rd shot since there's a one stroke penalty for an OB ball). Replayed balls from initial balls hitting poles also count. There will be a marker that the person who hits closest to the pin/hole will write their name on (man or lady). Then the marker is to be inserted into the green where that persons ball came to rest (after they are done putting). If someone in the next group manages to put their ball closer than the marker, then they write their name to the list and move the marker. Note that until a player manages to hit the green, the marker is left laying at the side of the green.
Longest Putt Contest
For a given hole, there will be a marker with a form on it. The person who makes the longest putt on the green will write their name on the form and insert the marker into the green at the spot where they began their putt from. It does not matter how many strokes it took you to reach the green, as long as you made your putt within the 4-strokes over par per hole maximum score. When a player makes a putt from a distance further from the hole than the point at which the marker is located, then they will write their name on the list and move the marker to where they began their putt. Note that the longest putt made for the first group sets the starting point for the marker.
Tournaments:
The league has played multiple different formats of tournaments in the past. Below is a brief description of each tournament format. They are a lot of fun and everyone is encouraged to play in them!
Orange Ball Tournament
Teams of 4 players will be formed and handicaps will be averaged for a team handicap. Each team will use an orange ball for a round of nine holes as described. Each team must declare which player will use the orange ball for a given hole, before play for that hole begins. The remaining team members are to play their own ball on holes they are not playing the orange ball. This round is still used for handicapping purposes. Each player must play the orange ball for a minimum of two holes (the team decides which player will use the orange ball on three holes). The team score is the total scratch score for the orange ball less handicap. Lowest team score wins. Note that if the orange ball is lost during the round, the team will be penalized 3 strokes on top of their final score. This rule change will keep teams in the tournament thru all nine holes.
Two Club Tournament
This one's real simple. You pick any 2 clubs out of your bag and you play the 9 holes with those 2 clubs. If you choose a putter, that counts as one of your clubs. Normal handicaps will be used and you must have your bag. No guests will be allowed to participate in this tournament.
Two Person Tournament
This will be a two-person team. We will average your handicaps together and this will be a best ball format. Each player must have at least 4 drives each leaving the last drive a choice between the two. With that said you will both tee off, then whoever has the best position both players will play their second shot from that position, and so on until the ball is sunk in the hole. If you have fulfilled all of your 4 drives, the only choice is to take the other person's drive even if it goes into the water, both would drop for a stroke penalty etc, so choose your drives carefully.
Best Ball Tournament
This is another classic format. Teams of four players will be formed based upon handicap to form fairly evenly handicapped teams. Each player tees their ball and drives it. All second shots are made from the position of the best ball hit (as decided by the team). Play continues this way until the hole is holed out. The score upon completing the hole is recorded as the team score. Note that each player's drive must be used on a minimum of two holes (as decided by the team). The team with the lowest scratch score (no handicap) wins.
Year End Tournament (Playoffs)
To qualify for the year end tournament, you must have at least 7 regular rounds and have paid the annual dues.
Tee Times:
Tee times will be done by lottery approximately 12pm Tuesday and will be announced via email. Members are to wait at the clubhouse for the league starter ( Shannon, Scott, or Joey) to arrive. The first group will tee off from the FRONT nine at approximately 4:00pm. Tee off order will be done thru lottery by groups that are signed up on the on-line sign-up sheet. If the signed up group is not at the starting tee upon their start-time, the next following group will automatically take their place in line. Golfers of all experience levels are welcome to join. Separate handicap flights will be used to assure fairness. Weekly prizes will be awarded for the best net scores in each flight. Several special tournaments will be held throughout the summer and a league championship will be held at the end of the season followed by a year-end party.

This is a three round contest where only your best two rounds net score (with handicap) is used. The lowest two round net score for each flight wins. If you miss one of the three weeks, then both rounds played are used to compute your score. If you only play one week, you do not qualify to win, but you at least you've had fun.
Groupings for the playoffs will be paired among your flight group.
